Pineapples are the flamboyant, hip-swaying vanguard of the Fruit Mardi Gras. They’re also not into the whole skinny model thing; they’re more J-Lo in a weird green tiara. As a result, pineapples can get quite big – full of fibre, the anti-cancer agent Bromelain, and really delicious juice. To be fair, the smaller varietals like the Natal Queen weigh in at around 900g, but those Kona Sugarloafs can tip the scales at 3kg. There is one example, though, that’s larger than all of them – and you don’t have to travel very far to find it. Just head up the R67 to Bathurst! Here, you’ll see a 16.5m high, three-storey pineapple built from fibreglass and steel. Step inside and you can buy chutney, or check out the 360° views. Other than visiting the Addo Dung Beetle Breeding Station, it’s one of the strangest things you can do in the Eastern Cape. Here’s to the fruit!
